Why is a crown necessary and how is it done? Sometimes when there is too much decay in a tooth covering multiple surfaces. If too much tooth structure is missing or if Root Canal treatment was done, a crown may be needed to keep the tooth viable. Build-ups are used in conjunction with a crown for added support and strength to make up for the lack of tooth structure. First a preliminary impression is taken to allow the assistant to make a temporary to protect the tooth while the final restoration is being fabricated. After the doctor makes sure the patient is adequately anesthetized he or she will then prepare the tooth with a series of tools so that a final impression can be taken. Depending on the condition of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth sometimes it is necessary to allow the gums to heal first before the final impression is taken. That is so that all the margins are captured in the impression for the crown to be made correctly. After the assistant makes your temporary and final impression is taken, it takes approximately 2 weeks for the final restoration to come back from the lab. At that time the temporary and any remaining temp cement will be removed. The final restoration is tried in and any adjustments that need to be made will be done before final cementation.
